An early morning yoga routine can offer a jumpstart for your day — even without coffee. Yoga helps you get your body moving and energised, shaking off the stiffness of sleep. An early morning yoga routine can be a refreshing, healthy way to start your day.

Yoga offers relaxation, and can help you alleviate stress, anxiety, and tension right when you wake up. It’s a great way to wake up and sets the tone for a more well centred day.

However, it’s not always easy to get up early enough to spend time doing yoga in the morning. And it’s never a good idea to sacrifice your sleep time so that you can practice yoga. Follow these strategies for getting up early and enjoying yoga without missing out on the sleep you need to feel energised all day.

Get to Bed on Time

You can’t wake up early if you don’t get to bed early. Plan ahead and calculate what time you’ll need to get to bed so that you can sleep for seven to nine hours before it’s time to wake up for your early morning yoga routine. Make sleep a priority, ensuring that your commitments and habits don’t interfere with your ability to get to sleep on time.

Get Ready the Night Before

Every minute is precious in the morning, especially when you’re waking up early. Make getting ready for yoga part of your nighttime routine before bed. Set out your mat and clothes, or pack a bag so you reduce the steps between your bed and morning yoga.

Start Yoga in Bed

If you can’t quite motivate yourself out of bed for yoga in the early morning, don’t worry about it. You can get started with simple yoga moves in bed. This is a good option when you’re just getting started establishing your yoga routine, or when you are feeling sluggish or tired in the morning.

Commit to Just 15 Minutes

You don’t have to start out with an hour long morning yoga session if you just don’t have the time or energy yet. Starting an early morning yoga routine is about establishing the habit, so even a short session will be beneficial to your daily energy and help you get in the swing of waking up to do yoga each day.

Practice Your Favourite Poses

Your early morning yoga routine should be joyful, something to look forward to and not dread. Save challenging poses for later, and instead, practice your favourite poses in the morning. Using your favourite yoga poses in the morning can give you something to look forward to and help you get motivated to get out of bed and start your routine.


Doing yoga in the morning can be a rejuvenating and mindful way to wake up. However, you shouldn’t sacrifice your sleep for a long morning yoga session. Find what works for you by going to bed a little early and planning a short morning yoga session.
