What is Barre and What are its Benefits?

what is barre and what are the benefits - Rebalance Pilates and Yoga

Over the last few years a new phenomenon has emerged in the fitness industry with classes and studios popping up all over the world. This thing called “Barre”, pronounced “bar”. There are a few different programs out there for Barre, but they all stem from the same concepts and foundations.  So what is Barre, and what are the benefits?

Think toning, think strengthening, think lengthening, think tightening, think stabilising. This is what Barre is all about. A workout dedicated to the lengthening, toning, strengthening and stabilising of the muscles and body.

The name and its connotations can scare some people off as they hear “Barre” and assume it’s a ballet style class where they need to be graceful, co-ordinated and flexible. The great thing about Barre is that you can be all those things or none of those things and still enjoy the class! Its all about taking it to your own level at your own pace and at your own capability on each given day.

So what are the benefits of Barre?

  1. Total Body Toning

Barre is an amazing toning workout for the whole body – especially the butt and thighs. It is essentially a body weight resistance training class, using only your body weight to create load in the muscles. Small pieces of equipment such as balls, bands and hand weights can be incorporated to classes to increase the challenge for some exercises and add in upper body focused work. The speed at which Barre classes are performed and the number of repetitions makes for a toning rather than bulking workout. Even when you feel those muscles burning, you will not be building bulk, you will be toning muscle and creating a long, lean and toned physique.

  1. Lengthening the Body and Muscles

Not only is Barre about tightening and toning the muscles it is also about lengthening the limbs and stretching the body. Too often exercise programs are all about building tension and loading the muscles without counterbalancing that with lengthening work. Barre gives you both!

  1. Fat Burning

Did you know that your far burning zone is 65% of your maximum heart-rate? This is what we are to hit and hold in a Barre class. Coupling the resistance training aspect of Barre with the cardio inclusion allows the body to reach the fat burning zone. All while listening to awesome music and having fun with your friends!

  1. Balance and Stability

Barre incorporates exercises on one leg, which requires balance and stability. Strengthening the muscles responsible for balance and body stability will carry over in to your everyday life. As we get older balance is one of the first things we lose. But with Barre we can strengthen those muscles so that we can prolong that for as long as possible. The great thing if your balance isn’t perfect is that the barre is always there to use, enabling you to slowly work up to not needing it for a number of certain exercises.

  1. It’s FUN!

Barre is a super fun workout, done to music, with high energy, enthusiasm and interaction. This is a class where you can tailor it to how you are feeling each day or for any injuries or limitations you may have by simply reducing your range of movement or slowing the move down meaning it is accessible to everyone!
